Polar Extremes

Parenthesis was proud to be involved with Mark Wood, Polar Explorer and Coventrian, in the early stages of his North South Solo expedition, by putting him in touch with our network of clients who were happy to support the expedition.

The expedition was the first solo unsupported and unaided attempt to the Geographic North and South Poles. Mark reached the South Pole on 10th January after 50 days alone on the ice. He completed the expedition at the North Pole earlier this year, where oddly enough he was greeted by the wedding party of another famous explorer, Borge Ousland.

Mark’s mission was to raise awareness of climate change. Ironically, it was melting ice caused by a rising global temperature and shortened Polar seasons that nearly scuppered the expedition. The high cost of the rescue bond required by a specialist Arctic airline (due to the dangerous conditions) caused the explorer to change his route twice. Eventually Mark was able to complete the expedition, skiing a round trip of 140 miles (222km) to the North Pole from the Norwegian Arctic, having experienced first hand the devastating effects of climate change.
