Advent Day Sixteen: Birmingham REP Theatre – Controversy

The Birmingham Rep will always be memorable to us for one particular play that we produced a promotional poster and programme for. Called Behzti (Dishonour), the play provoked violent protests and thousands of pounds worth of damage at the Rep theatre in December 2004. The theatre was forced to cancel the play on safety grounds and the playwright Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti had to go into hiding following death threats. The protests, we hasten to add, were not as a consequence of our poster but related to a particular scene in the play set in a Sikh Temple.

Surprisingly, Parenthesis staff were inundated for the following few days with phone calls from the press, including the Mail and Express, encouraging us to comment on the episode – which we obviously declined to do, not wishing to breach any client confidences.
